Minnesota mandates robust dementia care training for facilities serving individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias, ensuring staff are prepared to meet their unique needs.

Training Requirements:

  • Initial Training: Direct care staff and supervisors must complete training before providing care to residents with dementia.
  • Annual Training: Staff must participate in ongoing annual training to stay updated on best practices.

Training Content:

  • Explanation of Alzheimer’s disease and its progression.
  • Communication strategies tailored to individuals with cognitive impairments.
  • Assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs).
  • Techniques for addressing challenging behaviors.
  • Methods for creating a safe and supportive environment for residents.
